CLINTON – Rep. Harold Naughton confirmed Tuesday afternoon that he will not run for re-election until his fourteenth term in the House of Representatives in November after accepting a position with a New York law firm that will allow him to move from his Clinton home to work out.

Naughton, in a press release shared with Worcester Telegram and the Gazette, said he plans to serve the remainder of his term this year but will work for Napoli Shkolnik PLLC to handle national class and mass crime lawsuits, including ongoing litigation, dealing with public water pollution, the opioid epidemic, vaping and human trafficking.

“While I’m not going to say I am leaving the civil service forever, this is the best decision for my family and me right now,” Naughton, a Democrat, said in a statement, according to the newspaper.

Naughton represents the 12th district of Worcester consisting of Berlin; Boylston; Clinton; Lancaster; Northborough: Wards 2, 4; and District 2 in sterling.

Naughton was first elected in 1994 and is currently co-chair of the Joint Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee. Naughton didn’t return an email asking for comment Tuesday morning, but the Telegram and Gazette reported his plans based on a press release after the news service reported that longtime associate Meghan Kilcoyne set up a campaign committee on Monday, to run for her boss’s 12th Worcester District seat.

Ceylan Rowe, a Northborough Democrat, has been running for the Worcester County seat since November and announced Tuesday that she had qualified for the election.

Thirteen members of the House of Representatives, including Naughton and several veterans including Thomas Petrolati Springfield, Louis Kafka of Stoughton, and Angelo Scaccia of Boston, have said they will not seek another term in 2020, in addition to the three representatives who have already held that meeting for other jobs have left .
