Meta Hit With $3.2 Billion USD Class Action Lawsuit

Meta has been hit by a $3.2 billion class action lawsuit, The Guardian reported. The lawsuit alleges that the company broke competition rules by exploiting the data of 44 million Facebook users in the UK between 2015 and 2019.

The lawsuit was filed by legal specialist Dr. Liza Lovdahl Gormsen filed at the Innsworth litigation office. As the main social network in the UK and owner of other social networks such as Instagram and Whatsapp, Lovdahl Gormsen said Facebook tracks user habits across websites and has “abused its dominant position to impose unfair terms and conditions on ordinary Britons, giving it the power to do so to exploit their personal data.”

“They exploit users by taking their personal information without adequately compensating them,” Lovdahl Gormsen said in a statement provided to The Guardian. “I don’t think users fully realize how unfair this deal is when they click on the terms and conditions.”

As an “opt-out” class action, users do not have to join the case and will be awarded damages if successful unless they choose to opt out.

Meta was briefed on the case by lawyers working with Lovdahl Gormsen.

“People access our service for free. They choose our Services because we offer them value and they have meaningful control over what information they share and with whom on Meta’s platforms. We’ve invested heavily in developing tools to enable them to do this,” a meta spokesman said, according to The Guardian.
