Law Firm Hires, Pro-Bono, & Innovation

Summer is just around the corner and we’re back with yet another edition of the National Law Review’s legal industry news column. This week we cover the latest news on law firm hiring, pro bono, and legal award recognition. Read on for the latest updates:

Law firms and relocations

The Chicago Bar Association’s Young Lawyers’ Section (YLS) appointed

Ms. Brammeiers practice focuses on the areas of aviation, transport, building and construction liability as well as other areas of personal injury and litigation in the event of unlawful homicide. She also participated in the YLS Wills for Heroes project.

Steven M. Regan joined Steptoe & Johnson’s business division from its Pittsburgh office. Mr. Regan’s practice focuses on real estate, property development and corporate transactions. Mr. Regan represents real estate investors in the structuring of real estate investments and the implementation of acquisitions and the financing of projects in all asset classes.

Norris McLaughlin law firm hired new attorneys for the litigation practice for the Pennsylvania office, as well as a summer partner. The new hires include:

  • Thomas H. Dinkelacker focuses on local government, land use and real estate law and represents clients before hearing committees, code appeal committees, administrative authorities and various courts in Pennsylvania.

  • Rebecca J. Grausam-Charamella focuses on complex litigation and represents a wide variety of clients in jury trials, hearings, mediation and arbitration. She also served as a litigation attorney for the State Farm Insurance Company for eight years.

  • Andrew J. Shaw focuses his practice on commercial disputes and has extensive experience in all stages of litigation in state and federal courts.

  • William R. Murphy III defends individuals involved in civil litigation in general liability matters. He also represents insurance carriers and has experience with insurance fraud and car accidents.

  • Rocco Beltrami will join as a temporary summer assistant to assist the attorneys during his law degree at Villanova Charles Widger School of Law.

Law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, LLP, announced the addition of Naeun Rim to their Los Angeles law firm as litigation partner. Ms. Rim represents clients at the intersection of civil litigation and commercial defense matters in the healthcare, financial services, entertainment and technology industries.

Ms. Rim is also one of the few Asian American women who served as a litigation attorney for a Fortune 150 company in one of California’s largest environmental litigation.

Democracy Forward has named attorney Skye Perryman as its new president and chief executive officer. Ms. Perryman is a founding litigation attorney for the organization. As President and CEO, Ms. Perryman will focus on addressing unlawful threats to democracy and social progress. She succeeds Anne Harkavy, the founding executive director of the organization.

Ms. Perryman most recently served as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, where she worked on improving access and equity in women’s health care.

Philanthropy and Pro Bono law firm

Jackson Lewis PC partnered with the Association of Corporate Counsel’s Employment and Labor Law Network (ACC) to develop RACE Talks: Realign Act Change Engage, a racial justice program that focuses on individual transformation and change, to create a racially fairer job and a fairer society. The RACE Talks program highlighted specific actions to promote social justice in society and included podcasts, videos and articles.

Samia M. Kirmani of Jackson Lewis led work-place prejudice sessions and hosted live discussions with Michael D. Thomas and Tanya A. Bovée. Weldon H. Latham also contributed to the discussions.

“We were thrilled that ACC asked Jackson Lewis to develop a program to promote racial justice,” said Ms. Bovée. “2020 was a racist awakening for many and this was the perfect opportunity to focus on how individuals can transform and bring about positive change. We designed this program with the aim of getting participants out of their comfort zone, breaking their own status quo, and thinking differently about race and the concept of bias. “

The North Carolina Pro Bono Resource Center has inducted four attorneys from the Ward and Smith Law Firm into the 2020 North Carolina Pro Bono Honor Society. Despite the challenges in 2020, Mary Cavanaugh, Chris Edwards, Paul Fanning, and Lance Martin participated in a variety of pro bono activities across the state.

“Many North Carolina attorneys recognized the needs posed by COVID-19 and provided volunteer legal services to ensure that ‘justice is done without preferential, denial, or delayed’ as our state’s constitution requires,” North Carolina told Der Supreme Court Chairman Paul Newby in the announcement.

Frost Brown Todd (FBT) is celebrating June 10th this year by donating the entirety of the ParentPreneur Foundation’s $ 10,000 Father’s Day Scholarship, giving ten colored fathers $ 1,000 each for their startups.

The ParentPreneur Foundation gives black entrepreneurs in the start-up business a chance to get a foothold and take off, and is committed to empowering these parents to leave a good legacy for their children.

Legal Industry Awards and Recognitions

The Globe and Mail named McCarthy Tétrault as recipient of its first Report on Business Top 25 Best B2B Brands Award. McCarthy Tétrault received the highest honor in the legal category out of 11 law firms.

The Best B2B Brands is a new research initiative from Globe and Mail Report on Business Magazine with Ipsos. The list is based on 42 different reviews of culture, innovation and other initiatives by 406 Canadian executives surveyed in January and February of this year.

Greenberg Traurig law firm received the Morgan Stanley Leadership in Excellence in Inclusion and Diversity Award. Bradford D. Kaufman, Greenberg Traurig co-president and global chairman for professional development and inclusion, accepted the award on behalf of the firm.
