Judicial appointments announced: Ontario Court of Justice welcomes six new judges

After his admission to the bar in the UK in 1998 and then in Ontario in 2002, Justice Waby served as Toronto Crown Attorney for over a decade. He is the legal director of the Attorney General’s Recovery Department. He helped restore court operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and led work on the resumption of jury courts and state criminal courts.

Waby led and implemented the Justice Department’s work on race-based data collection. He also acted as managing director of the criminal modernization group, in which he bundled the modernization work of the Attorney General.

Judge Callaghan, who was admitted to the bar in 1997, joined the North York Crown’s Office in 1999, serving first as Crown Assistant Attorney and then Crown Assistant Attorney. He worked with the Office of Strategic Initiatives to help develop an electronic case management and scheduling application that would convert all Crown assistant attorneys and non-legal staff from paper to electronic files.

Callaghan serves on the Ontario Court of Justice’s Criminal Modernization Committee, advising the Chief Justice and assisting the Assistant Assistant Attorney General. He also served as Debt Recovery Director for the Criminal Justice Department of the Attorney General’s Ministry.

Judge Wright was admitted to the bar in 2005 and has served as the Assistant Secretary’s Office Manager and Special Adviser to the Department of the Attorney General. He was previously an associate crown attorney on the Toronto Homicide Squad. He has a background in summary convictions, financial crime, child abuse and the Youth Criminal Justice Act appeals.
