Johnson & Johnson still makes a variety of baby powders with talc, although most baby powders are now made with cornstarch. Image created by Oppenheim Law
The test fiasco | Johnson and Johnson Baby Powder Cancer
Because of the high cancer risk associated with asbestos, Johnson & Johnson routinely tested its baby powder for this carcinogen. The tests they conducted allegedly found no asbestos in their baby powder. To conduct the results of these tests and report them to the court, they hired AMA Analytical Services’ laboratory manager, Andreas Saldivar, as an expert at Johnson & Johnson. Saldivar has been with Johnson & Johnson since 2017, assisting the company in litigation and not reporting any traces of asbestos in previous tests on labeled bottles. However, in 2019, at the request of the FDA, Saldivar’s laboratory tested an unlabelled container of baby powder and found traces of asbestos. The container turned out to be Johnson & Johnson baby powder.

After the FDA informed Johnson & Johnson in October 2019 of the results showing asbestos in their container of baby powder, the health giant responded with a voluntary recall of Lot # 22318RB, which comprised 33,000 containers. Johnson & Johnson stated that this was done “out of caution” and rightly, as the FDA said, “there are no known safe levels of asbestos”. According to Reuters, some major U.S. retailers have taken a similar route, taking all 22-ounce containers off their shelves. Still, it wasn’t long before Johnson & Johnson reconsidered their situation and made another decision. In May 2020, Johnson and Johnson decided to stop selling talc-based baby powder in the United States and Canada, mesothelioma and ovarian cancer.
