Is your home insured by Travelers, Liberty Mutual, Hanover, Commerce, Vermont Mutual, Chubb, Cambridge Mutual, or Merrimack Mutual? Are you concerned about the cost of property insurance?

Homeowners insurance provides financial protection if property is damaged or destroyed due to fire, wind, vandalism and other factors. Mortgage lenders typically require homeowners to carry homeowners insurance since the property serves as collateral for the loan.

A preliminary investigation has shown that some insurance companies have been selling homeowners policies with excessive and unnecessary coverage limits. As a result, many homeowners have unknowingly overpaid for insurance coverage on their homes.

Insurance companies such as State Farm have a history of paying large settlements over legal actions. In one instance, the insurance giant paid $352 million related to overcharging allegations in Texas. Farmers Insurance paid $117 million and All State paid $60 million in similar Texas cases.

Insurance companies have allegedly overcharged consumers beyond the home insurance category. State Farm, for example, faces a lawsuit over the same issue in life insurance, and Geico faces a law suit regarding overcharging on car insurance.

Homeowners Sue Insurers For Premium Overcharges

At least two class action lawsuits have been filed against companies that allegedly overcharged for homeowners insurance. The homeowners who filed these cases claim their policy limits were unlawfully inflated and therefore they were charged and paid excessive premiums.

The companies that have already been sued are likely not the only ones engaging in this allegedly unlawful practice. Potentially millions of homeowners throughout the United States have been similarly overcharged.
