Governor announces two judicial appointments to Superior and District courts

gov. Roy Cooper has announced the appointment of two judicial officials to the Superior and District courts, according to a release from the governor’s office.

The Honorable Lee Gavin, newly appointed to Superior Court, will serve as the judge in Judicial District 19B of Randolph County. Gavin currently serves as a District Court judge in Judicial District 19B. He will replace Judge Vance B. Long, who recently retired. Judge Gavin received a bachelor of arts and Juris Doctor degrees from Wake Forest University.

Replacing retired judge April Smith is Adam Phillips — newly appointed as the District Court judge in Judicial District 12 of Cumberland County. Phillips currently serves as an assistant public defender and district court supervisor in the Cumberland County Public Defender’s Office. Prior to this position, he was the information and communication specialist for the NC Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Protection Division. Phillips earned his BA and Juris Doctor degrees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
