Millions of people who have used TikTok are eligible to be part of a $ 92 million class action lawsuit that has been brought against them.
Sources have revealed that “the lawsuit alleges that Byte parent company TikTok improperly collected and used the plaintiff’s data”, which is now brings them to the hot spot to the incorrect handling of this sensitive information. The company vehemently denies these allegations.
As of this writing, anyone residing in the United States who has used the app since October 1, 2021 is entitled to collect a portion of the funds raised in this class action lawsuit. In fact, parents with underage children who have also accessed this app can qualify their children for this repayment as well.
This controversy sparked when it became known that sensitive data was being stored without the user’s consent, and that was enough to cause a major stir among the users of the trusted app.
When loyal TikTok users have signed up to use the app, they did not know that their personal data was being stored or shared in any capacity. This was not mentioned during the sign up process and no consent was given.
As it turns out, there was a significant void rocking the executives behind TikTok and they want to get it right. This is what news agencies report; “The settlement is the result of an amalgamation of 21 lawsuits, many of which were filed on behalf of minors,” and shows that the Illinois District Court alleges that TikTok uses technology that can identify the facial features of people in their videos, and analyze their faces to “determine the age, race / ethnicity, and gender of the user … to recommend content and profiles for the user to follow.”
Given that users were not made aware that their identity and personal information was being used in this way and were unable to opt out of that experience, they are now eligible for a withdrawal from this class action lawsuit.
Before anyone gets too upset, there are many details to evaluate and consider on this matter. TikTok has agreed to stop using biometric data and has to pay a few euros for the inconvenience for all those previously affected.
It was said that United States residents who used TikTok prior to October 1 are eligible To make claims and clarified that Illinois residents are entitled to a larger stake in the settlement pool.
As with any other form of “compulsory repayment”, it is the responsibility of those concerned to take action to express their concern.
If no one speaks of the injustice and the new, real relationship that has presented itself to the public remains the example for review, this case will cost millions.
The deadline for filing documents and participating in the class action is March 1, 2022.
