LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WKBT) – 48 Campbell City homeowners have filed class action lawsuits against dozen chemical companies and distributors of fire fighting foam.

According to the lawsuit filed in La Crosse County, manufacturers including 3M, Dupont and Tyco knew that the chemical PFAS compounds they used to make their fire fighting foam would contaminate groundwater and that PFAS cause serious health conditions such as cancer can . “They also have known for decades that they have a significant negative health impact and could foresee that they would pose a profound public health risk in communities like La Crosse. Still, they chose to make and sell products using these chemicals without warning their customers and put profits above public health and safety, ”says Attorney James Koby.

PFAS was used for decades to make the foam sprayed at La Crosse regional airport. According to the Wisconsin DNR, which has tested private and public wells across the city of Campbell, more than 500 are contaminated with PFAS. In some cases, the PFAS levels are so high that the water is not suitable for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth.

In March, the city of La Crosse filed a lawsuit against the same companies. A city lawyer says the companies knew their products posed public health risks.
