Morley Companies face federal class action lawsuit over data breach

SAGINAW COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) – We are learning new details of a cyber security breach at one of Saginaw County’s largest employers through a federal lawsuit that has been filed against the company.

It was back in early August when we reported Morley Companies had what it called, a cyber event, which caused some disruption to the company’s operation.

The lawsuit claims this was a ransomware attack and hundreds of thousands of people’s personal information may have been compromised.

It’s a class action lawsuit against Morley Companies, claiming that it did not do enough to protect the personal information, including social security numbers of more than a half a million people.

The lawsuit has been filed in federal court against Saginaw County-based Morley Companies. The lawsuit only names one plaintiff, Christine Thomsen from Maryville, Tennessee.

It claims that Morley Companies was hit with a ransomware type attack that began on July 20th of last year, but the company did not become aware that sensitive data may have been compromised until August 1st, about twelve days later.

It was on August 3rd when ABC 12 reported Morley was hit by the cyber event.

The lawsuit claims the data breach may have involved more than 521,000 people, including current and former employees, and various business clients.

It says Morley stored the personal information in a reckless and negligent manner and says it did not properly monitor its systems to prevent such an attack.

The lawsuit also alleges Morley didn’t do enough to inform those possibly impacted in a timely manner.

A Morley spokesperson could not comment on the lawsuit because the company has not been served papers yet.

In an earlier press release, Morley states “it is not aware of any evidence indicating the misuse of any information potentially involved in this incident. However, beginning on February 1, 2022, notice of this incident was provided to potentially impacted individuals.”

Information that has been illegally obtained by cyber crooks include names, social security numbers and medical information.

The lawsuit states the plaintiffs in the class action suit will have to incur costs with restoring and protecting their personal data.

We could not reach the law firm that filed the class action suit for comment. It is based out of Minnesota.

Morley Companies has about 2,100 employees. The business services company does a variety of work, including call centers, travel and exhibits and displays.
