ONE of the most prominent lawyers in North Wales is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a longstanding law firm.
David Jones spent three decades with Edward Hughes Solicitors based in Rhyl and Colwyn Bay.
Denbigh’s David has seen many changes – including significant technological advances since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic – and has represented thousands of people across the region in employment, personal, criminal and civil matters.
As he prepares to welcome daughter Ela to the practice as a paralegal and to join brother Ben, who is now a fully qualified lawyer, the 52-year-old thought about his own time at the organization.
“I wanted to be a lawyer from a young age, it was the opportunity to help people and make a difference that really appealed to me,” said David.
“I did an internship in Denbigh and I just liked the people and the characters you would meet.
“All those years later I could never have imagined how different the role would be, it has changed beyond recognition, but I am as determined and passionate as always for the law.”
A former student with Ysgol Glan Clwyd in St. Asaph, David studied at Liverpool University and Chester Law School before joining Edward Hughes Solicitors as an intern in the early 1990s.
“I knew I didn’t care about the corporate side of the law, even though it’s more lucrative; I wanted to work on litigation and civil and personal injury so I could try to make people’s lives better, ”he said.
“I did, and the business kept growing until, at the turn of the century, I was asked to become a partner before I knew it.
“It remains a great honor and as an organization we’ve always tried to get things right. Unfortunately, many law firms in this area no longer exist, but we have managed to stay on course and stay on the front lines. “
He added, “There have been major changes along the way, from word processors and typewriters to this day where many lawyers are locked in their offices and many cases are tried online.
“That was a necessity because of the pandemic, but it’s a thing that I miss. A large part of their future is in your hands.
“The technology has done a lot, but that’s not all that good. There have been many cuts that have had a negative impact, especially on more vulnerable people, which is sad to see and less time to spend with customers, but here we are and we need to be accepted – the world has moved on. “
David is now looking forward to another 10 years in the legal field, but admits it may be time for a change.
“I look forward to seeing where life takes me. Who knows what’s next I have a lot of ideas, there are a lot of things I want to do and I want to give a lot back, so watch this room, ”he said.
“I’ve been fortunate to be able to work on some great studies, represent hundreds and hundreds of people, and work with many great people here at Edward Hughes, it has been an honor.
“This can be intense and intimidating work, but you have to get on with it. That is why we are ultimately there and after 30 years my ethos is still the same to try to help those who need it most. “
