James Franco Reaches Settlement in Sexual Misconduct Lawsuit

James Franco Settlement of a class action lawsuit in 2019 alleging sexual misconduct against students at the drama school he founded.

Sarah Tither-Chaplain and Toni Gaal, two of the 42-year-old actor’s former students at the now-closed Studio 4 school, agreed to drop their claims according to court documents received from Us Weekly and filed on February 11. Her allegations of sexual exploitation have been dismissed even without prejudice, which means they can be replenished in the future. Fraud claims arising from the lawsuit are subject to limited clearance.

The amount of money associated with the deal is unknown. The settlement is expected to be submitted for preliminary judicial approval by March 15.

Franco responded to the allegations of sexual misconduct in January 2018, claiming during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that he had “heard” rather than “read” it.

“In my life I take pride in taking responsibility for things I’ve done. I have to do this to keep myself well. I always do it when I know something is wrong or needs to be changed. I make it my goal to do this, ”he explained. “The things I heard on Twitter are incorrect, but I fully support the people who can come out and have a voice because they haven’t had a voice for so long. So I don’t want to turn it off in any way. I think this is a good thing and I support it. “

Days later, five women came forward to accuse the actor of inappropriate or sexually exploitative behavior. “I think there was an abuse of power and a culture of exploitation of women without celebrity and a culture of substitutability for women,” Tither-Kaplan told the Los Angeles Times. Franco’s lawyer denied all claims at the time.

The disaster artist star resigned from the limelight due to the allegations. “He changed his phone number when the scandal broke out,” a source told us exclusively in January 2018. “He’s very inconspicuous. He’s only speaking to a select few people now. He’s paranoid if anything comes out.”

Franco hit the headlines again in October 2018 when his Freaks and Geeks appeared as a costar Philipps busy claimed in her memoir that he was a “king bully”. She accused him of pushing her and looking her in the face on set. She claimed he later apologized after being told to do so, but he was never officially punished.

The 41-year-old Cougar Town alum cleared up the details later that month. “The Franco story is used to illustrate a larger point about how women are treated in this business in life. There are no “allegations” and no “allegations”, “she wrote on Instagram.” It’s a story I’ve been telling for years. James apologized. I accept. And I can still tell because it happened to me . “
