RALEIGH – A two-time cabinet member of then North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory has taken on a legal firm position to work with companies interested in moving to or expanding in the state.
John Skvarla served as Trade Secretary for the past two years and as McCrory’s Secretary of Environment for the first two years of McCrory’s term. The Raleigh law firm Nexsen Pruett announced on Wednesday the hiring of Skvarla.
Skvarla ran the so-called Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and focused on making the agency more “customer-friendly” for the companies it regulates. He also looked at a coal ash that was spilled along the Dan River in early 2014.
At Commerce, he worked on recruiting companies as the state’s economy improved and a law restricting LGBT rights was introduced during negative publicity.
