Former employees file class action lawsuit against JCCEO

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The financially troubled JCCEO is now facing a class action lawsuit by former employees.

Around Thanksgiving, former JCCEO employees received notice that they had been fired. We’re talking about hundreds of people who no longer have jobs. Now some of them are banding together and asking JCCEO to pay.

“It’s just like the movie back then, where is the money?” Eric Guster, an attorney who represents some of the former employees.

Former Head-Start employees, including Veronica Kemp, are wondering this. She filed a federal class action lawsuit against the JCCEO. The lawsuit alleges unpaid wages and broken promises. Eric Guster is one of the lawyers representing Kemp and other laid-off workers.

“JCCEO has disappointed hundreds of people who have put their lives into this program. It really hurt, ”said Guster.

The claims of dismissed employees were not paid for one week of work completed. Guster says former employees were fired even without a federally mandated 60-day notice period.

“Attorney Roderick Cooks and I are working really hard to make these people healthy because that is something that is personal to us. It’s Christmas. These people will be homeless in many cases and JCCEO should be ashamed of what they did to these people, ”said Guster.

We are still waiting for JCCEO to respond to this lawsuit.

Earlier this month, former JCCEO employees announced that all of the money sent for the head start had been deposited into an account and it was all spent. A private agency is now running the advance program.
