Ford Mustang Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Wiring

According to Ford Mustang owner, the trunk lid wiring harness resulted in his car losing the rear view camera.

May 16, 2021 – A class action lawsuit against Ford Mustang alleges the cars have defective wiring harnesses in the trunk lids, causing failures in the rear-view cameras, trunk releases, trunk lights and satellite radio reception.

The lawsuit alleges that Mustangs in Illinois (2015-2017) are dangerous because critical safety equipment either fails or works only partially.

Ford reportedly knew the trunk lid wiring harnesses had problems before the Mustangs were ever sold, but the automaker reportedly did not warn customers of the dangers.

Illinois plaintiff Enrique Rodriguez owns a 2015 Ford Mustang that he bought in October 2019, but the Mustang’s rearview camera began to fail in November 2019. The plaintiff claims he received less than he paid because the rear view camera is still having issues.

The class action lawsuit states that Ford issued a technical service bulletin (TSB 18-2362) in December 2018 informing service technicians of the wiring harness failure and recommending a repair procedure.

However, the plaintiff says Ford did not recall the Mustangs or offer extended warranties to owners based on the wiring harnesses in the trunk.

And the plaintiff claims the TSB repair procedure won’t work anyway because it instructs Ford technicians to splice new wire into the harness to replace the broken wire and add two new solder points for each replaced wire.

According to Mustang’s class action lawsuit, the solder joints are inflexible and even more prone to wear and tear than the original wiring. The plaintiff says this means the Mustangs will continue to have issues with the trunk lid wiring harnesses.

The class action lawsuit says Ford dealers routinely notify Mustang owners that no issues have been found, resulting in owners continuing to lose their rearview cameras and other features.

At other times, dealers allegedly inform Ford Mustang customers that the repairs are not cheap, even though the trunk lid wiring harness repairs are said to be inadequate.

The class action lawsuit against Ford Mustang has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois: Enrique Rodriguez v Ford Motor Company.

The plaintiff is represented by Barnow and Associates, PC, and Ahdoot & Wolfson, PC.
