First Biden Judicial Confirmation of 2022 is Ninth Circuit Pick

Gabriel Sanchez was confirmed Wednesday as the third of President Joe Biden’s nominees for justice in the federal appeals court.

At the taping of the first court confirmation of 2022, the Senate voted 52 to 47 to send the California state appeals judge to the San Francisco-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Sanchez’s confirmation comes after a historic first year in nominating judges for the Biden administration. In 2021, Biden beat every modern president since Ronald Reagan for most district and circuit confirmations. Of his 40 life federal judge endorsements, 11 went to district courts and 29 to district courts.

Sanchez will join Biden nominees Jennifer Sung and Lucy Koh on the Ninth Circuit. And a fourth Ninth Circle nominee, Holly Thomas, whose nomination has already passed a procedural vote, is awaiting a confirmation vote.

There are currently 32 candidates for lifetime appointments awaiting Senate action, including six county candidates.
